Ganesh Chaturthi: A joyous celebration of community and tradition in Goa

The festive spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi is an integral part of Goa’s cultural heritage. The preparation begins well in advance, with families decorating their homes with intricate designs, colourful rangoli, and vibrant decorations, creating a festive atmosphere that permeates every corner of the state. Various villages have their unique traditions and customs to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, showcasing the diversity and richness of local cultures.

Strong family bonds are at the heart of its community spirit, showcased in the annual five-day Ganesh festival. In Adpai village from Ponda taluka, the joint families comprising 150-250 individuals from multiple nuclear families, unite under one umbrella, fostering unity and togetherness. The immersion procession in Adpai village is a spectacular 4-hour event, commencing at 3-4 pm on the 5th day, featuring elaborate tableaux and the revered Ganesh idol. This vibrant spectacle attracts a massive crowd from across the state, who gather to witness the procession’s mesmerizing display of mythological and contemporary themes.

Cumbharjua village is known for its unique “Sangod” tradition which is held on the seventh day, where a vibrant procession of decorated canoes and boats takes place. These floats showcase mythological scenes as well as contemporary social messages. The event draws large crowds, with participants and spectators alike gathering along the Cumbharjua canal and bridge to enjoy the festive atmosphere and creative displays.
